Kew director underlines the importance of plants

As it begins its 250th anniversary year, London's much-loved Kew Gardens is once again at the forefront of conservation and botanical science in the UK.
To coincide with the start of this historic year, Kew's director Professor Stephen Hopper has said that plant life is as important for the human species as it ever has been.
The leading botanist stated that many people still rely on wild plants for their survival and that this aspect of nature had a vital role for all mankind.
Professor Hopper said: "We believe that at no other point in history have plants been so important to people.
"They have importance as carbon sinks in a time of climate change and we have to care for what remains and address the serious business of repairing and restoring vegetation if we're going to have the buffers to climate variation that plant life offers."
