Kew Gardens is the best in UK
Published: Wednesday 8th of October 2008
Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, West London has been voted as Britain's top public garden.
Millions of travellers across the world put Kew Gardens as the runaway winner, in a poll by website TripAdvisor. The Gardens reported more than 1.4 million visitors in 2008.
The Gardens have been in existence in one form or another since the middle of the eighteenth century, and have grown piecemeal ever since. Its third major conservatory was opened in 1987 by Diana Princess of Wales, and houses ten different climate zones.
In 2003 the Gardens were put on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites and is also a key part of the UK's ecological conservative effort, housing 96 per cent of the plant life in the UK and 75 per cent of the country's threatened plant species.
Visitors to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew can enjoy free entry with their LondonPass, which is a saving of £13 on the adult price. Holders can also receive a ten per cent discount on entry to the adjacent Kew Palace, originally built by George III at a nursery for his children.
