Kew Gardens goes green and bans plastic bags
Published: Wednesday 18th of June 2008
In a bid to boost its green credentials, Kew Gardens has announced it is to banish plastic bags in its shops and only use paper bags.
As part of the Greener Kew Initiative, the top London attraction is one of a group of traders in the town of Kew that have pledged to replace plastic bags with alternatives made from biodegradable and environmentally friendly materials.
Michael Glazebrook, chairman of the Kew Society which is helping to organise the initiative, commented: "We hope to show other villages and towns all over the country what they can and should do to change things if they get together. All things are possible."
Some shops, such as local butchers Pethers, have gone a step further and had their own hessian bags manufactured, reports the Richmond and Twickenham Times.
According to the Guardian, 13 billion plastic bags are given away free in the UK every year and each one takes between 400 and 1,000 years to break down.
