Flowers blooming late at Kew
Published: Monday 2nd of March 2009
Flowers at Kew Gardens have come out at their latest for 20 years, one expert reports.
Mild winters have meant that flowers have bloomed quicker over previous years, although the recent cold snap has seen this trend reversed, says Louise Gray, environment correspondent at the Daily Telegraph.
"I think we are about a week behind the modern pattern but everything is catching up fast," comments Matthew Oates, nature conservation adviser at the National Trust.
He adds that some flowers were affected by the sudden change in temperature, with laburnum being particularly damaged by the unusual climate.
A study is taking place at the gardens, which shows snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and aconites all came up around the average flowering date for the 1980s.
Holders of the London Pass can visit Kew Gardens free of charge, saving themselves £13 on the price of an adult ticket.
