Parrots cool down with ice lollies

Published: Monday 28th of July 2008

In the heat of the summer sun, the ZSL London Zoo's family of Military Macaws were treated to some ice-cold refreshments.

Keepers at the top London attraction made the three parrots ice lollies containing walnuts, dates, pecans, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds and orange juice.

Alison Brown, one of the zoo's keepers, said: "The ice lollies are part of a carefully-planned daily enrichment programme, which also includes things like nuts hidden inside logs, fruit kebabs and melons with seeds hidden inside."

Other treats enjoyed by the parrots are flowers which they like to pull apart and taste the nectar inside, added Ms Brown.

People visiting the zoo will also be able to see an exhibition of sculptures made from recycled materials. In November, there will be a symposium entitled Halting the Global Decline in Amphibians: research and practice.

London Pass holders can receive free entry to ZSL London Zoo.
