London Zoo says goodbye to an old friend

Published: Monday 8th of December 2008

A top London visitor attraction has bid farewell to one of its most-loved residents.

Staff at London Zoo are mourning the loss of Bobby the silverback gorilla, who died aged 25 on Friday December 5th.

Bobby, whose full name was Bongo Junior, passed away in his nest and was found during a routine early morning check by keepers.

Director general of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Ralph Armond said: "Staff, volunteers, members and the general public are devastated by the loss of ZSL London Zoo’s gentle giant.

"Bobby was a much-loved member of the ZSL family and leaves behind his family of keepers and three female gorillas, Mjukuu, nine, Effie, 15 and Zaire, 34."

The Zoo will be holding a moment's remembrance for Bobby, who joined from Bristol in 2003, on December 10th at 15:00.

LondonPass holders can enjoy a visit to London Zoo for free, saving £15.50 for adults and £12.50 for children.
