London Zoo offers arachnophobia courses
Published: Saturday 10th of January 2009
One of the capital's world-famous visitor attractions, London Zoo is to offer a series of courses aiming at ridding people of the irrational fear of spiders.
The zoo's Friendly Spider Programme (FSP) will run on one afternoon a month from April to October.
In introducing its new initiative, the zoo says: "There is no good reason to have a spider phobia, they're harmless and extremely beneficial invertebrates whose survival depends on avoiding such large, lumbering threats as ourselves.
"However, millions of perfectly rational people are terrified of spiders. No matter how much they try to calm themselves the response remains the same: sweating, nausea, panic, rapid heartbeat and worse."
The courses will combine cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy to aim to cure people of their fear of spiders.
Hypnotherapist John Clifford will be on hand to introduce the programme and Dan Clarke, arachnid expert at the zoo, will explore the truth about spiders to prove that most fears are completely unfounded.
LondonPass visitors can enjoy free entry to London Zoo, saving £15.50 for adults and £12.50 for children.
