London Zoo calls for kids help in frog problem
Published: Tuesday 19th of August 2008
Children are being urged to help ZSL London Zoo tackle a problem regarding amphibians.
According to CBBC's Newsround, experts at popular London attraction ZSL London Zoo are warning of two potentially deadly diseases that could destroy populations of frogs, toads and newts.
Lucy Benyon of Froglife told the children's news show people across the UK needed to keep their eyes peeled for frogs and toads with skin problems, and in particular dead amphibians.
Dr Andrew Cunningham of ZSL London Zoo added that the disease affecting frogs in Britain was most likely caught from people who had released amphibian pets from overseas into the countryside.
While not advising people to pick the peaky frogs up, Froglife and London Zoo ask for people to call the Froglife hotline.
According to London Zoo, conservation groups such as the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Conservation Union have chosen 2008 as the international year of the frog.
