Green award for ZSL London Zoo

Published: Saturday 14th of June 2008

ZSL London Zoo is celebrating after the top London attraction scooped an award for eco-friendliness.

The zoo became the first organisation of its kind to pick up a Green Tourism for London award.

Sophie Townsend, sustainability manager at zoo said: "How each individual chooses to behave has the greatest effect on our planet and our future and we are delighted that through this award, ZSL London Zoo can show visitors what an ethical choice they are making by visiting us."

Other green measures taken by the zoo recently include reducing water consumption by half and the installation of recycling points.

Jon Proctor, the Green Tourism for London auditor, said recent developments at the top London attraction, such as the Gorilla enclosure, show how much progress zoos have made when it comes to valuing the natural world.

First opened in 1928, ZSL London Zoo is officially the world's oldest scientific zoo and contains more than 650 animal species.

London Pass holders can receive free admission to ZSL London Zoo.
