Giant pandas could return to London Zoo
Published: Saturday 15th of November 2008
World-famous London Zoo is attempting to bring giant pandas back to the capital for the first time in 15 years, it has been reported.
The Daily Express claims that, with the support of mayor Boris Johnson, the Zoological Society of London are in talks with officials from Beijing Zoo about obtaining the much-loved creatures.
However, controversy has arisen over the proposed move which would see the pandas used to breed offspring in captivity, prompting concern from animal rights groups.
Craig Redmond, spokesman for the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, told the newspaper: "These are sentient animals, not diplomatic gifts to be traded between China and Britain.
"Keeping pandas in zoos will not help save this species. Only the work already in place to protect the pandas’ natural habitat and restore and connect suitable land will do that."
London Zoo is one of the world's most famous attractions and won three gold prizes at the 2007 VisitLondon Awards.
LondonPass holders can gain free entry to London Zoo, saving £15.40 for adults and £11.90 for children.
