A very special lizard prepares for his birthday

Published: Sunday 26th of October 2008

One of London Zoo's most famous residents, Raja the komodo dragon, has celebrated his tenth birthday in style.

What better way to pamper an example of the world's heaviest lizard species than with a nice manicure?

Raja was treated to having his claws trimmed at the world-famous zoo a few days before he turned ten and keepers said he looked and felt much better for it.

For several years now, visitors to the zoo have delighted in watching Raja's feeding time, when the stealthy dragon uses his garish yellow tongue to whip his tucker into his mouth in double-quick time.

Komodo dragons can grow up to three metres in length and 100kg in weight - making them one of the largest reptiles on Earth – and are the only lizards able to hunt prey greater in size than themselves.

London Zoo was founded in1826 and is widely-regarded as the world's leading zoological institution.

LondonPass visitors can gain free entry to London Zoo, saving £15.40 for adults and £11.90 for children.
