'Steptoe-alike' delights visitors to London Zoo
Published: Monday 22nd of December 2008
Channelling the spirit of a well-known miser, the latest addition to London Zoo seems to bear a striking resemblance to a much-loved TV character.
As the credit crunch bites and people look forward to what has been dubbed an 'austerity Christmas', London Zoo has welcomed a new colobus monkey into the world which some claim looks uncannily like Albert Steptoe, played by Wilfred Brambell in the 1960s comedy Steptoe and Son.
Zookeeper Andrea Payne said: "We couldn’t believe it when one of the keepers saw the resemblance.
"I'll be reminded of our little Albert every time Steptoe and Son is on television this Christmas."
The monkey is one of the residents of the Zoo's fantastic Gorilla Kingdom attraction, which cost a none-too-miserly £5.3 million to build.
Of course, this being Christmas after all, there's another penny-pinching character that might be recalled when hearing this news: that of Ebenezer Scrooge of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
LondonPass holders can watch their pennies when visiting London Zoo for free, saving £15.50 for adults and £12.50 for children.
