"Peak season" at London Wetland Centre
Published: Saturday 26th of July 2008
This month (July) is the "peak season" for visitors to London who wish to see damselflies and dragonflies at the London Wetland Centre.
London Wetland Centre is encouraging visitors to the capital city to visit during July in order to see some fascinating displays of insect behaviour from the creatures.
Recently, photos were taken of a damselfly landing on top of a dragonfly, unusual behaviour which could indicate that the damselfly was attempting to hybridise with the dragonfly.
The London Wetland Centre is home to a total of 21 different species of damselflies and dragonflies and according to experts, the act could be due to the ratio of the damselfly sexes as when there are too many males, they can look elsewhere in their "desperation" to find a mate.
"This was one of the more unusual sights we've photographed and we were lucky to get it too because the damselflies only stayed in place for a second or so, before flying off again and our equipment quit on us shortly after the photos were taken," visitors Chris and Anne Algar commented.
Damselflies are similar to dragonflies but are usually smaller and weaker fliers than dragonflies with their eyes set apart as opposed to the multifaceted eye formation of the common dragonfly.
