Tower Bridge to undergo facelift thanks to monks
Last Updated: Sun 20 Jul 2008

Tower Bridge in London is to undergo a major facelift thanks to the efforts of a group of monks, it has been reported.

As a result of the £4 million restoration project, the iconic bridge will have its flaking paintwork stripped away and replaced with 22,000 litres of white and blue paint.

Tower Bridge operations manager Eric Suthers commented: " If you give it a close inspection, you can see it's getting pretty grubby … the blue in particular is very faded."

In total, the work, which will be undertaken in stages to avoid disruption to the everyday running of the bridge, will consume 44,000 man hours, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The overhaul will be the first of its kind in the bridge's 114-year history and will not require taxpayers' money, thanks to the a group of medieval monks who collected tolls for the capital's bridges.

London Pass holders can receive free entry to the Tower Bridge.
