Things to do in London: See the Queen
Last Updated: Tue 17 Nov 2009

In between London sightseeing, people visiting the city tomorrow will be able to see the Queen travel in her coach from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament.

The Queen will officially open parliament for a new session tomorrow, Wednesday, November 18th, in a ceremony that has been performed for more than 500 years.

State Opening is the main ceremonial event of the parliamentary calendar and year-on-year attracts large crowds, both in person and watching on television and the internet.

The Queen's procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster is escorted by the Household Cavalry and she will arrive at the Sovereign's Entrance at about 11:15 GMT.

Wearing the Imperial State Crown and parliamentary robe the Queen takes the throne in the Chamber of the House of Lords, where she will deliver a speech in the presence of members of both houses.

The ceremony is closed to the general public but there are lots of other things to do in London, such as visiting the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, which are just a 15 minute walk away from the Houses of Parliament.
