Secret details discovered on painting at the Tate BritainA painting in which hidden details including two cherubs have been revealed is to go on display at Tate Britain, it has been reported.
John Hayls' A Portrait of a Lady and a Boy with Pan was acquired by the organisation in 1995 and has been the subject of a recent restoration.
Nothing seemed untoward until some cross-checking revealed a catalogue listing from a 1929 auction which referred to details not visible on the painting, reports the Daily Telegraph.
A spokesman for the Tate told the paper: "Whether they were overpainted due to early twentieth-century prudery, or to conceal a change of colour in the pigments used for the sky, is a mystery."
The newly-restored work will be exhibited as part of the Van Dyck and Britain event at the gallery from February 2009.
