Last Updated: Thu 22 Oct 2009

Through the introduction of additional carriages around 5,700 extra seats will be introduced each day on services in the North Essex and Ipswich corridor to and from London.

Nineteen existing Monday to Friday train services in the current timetable on routes between Braintree, Clacton-on-Sea, Colchester, Chelmsford, Harwich, Ipswich, Witham and London Liverpool Street will be increased to run as either eight carriage trains (from an existing four carriages) or 12 carriage trains (from an existing eight carriages) from December 13th.

Andrew Chivers, managing director at National Express East Anglia, said: "These improvements are the first stage in our exciting plans to provide more seats for our customers using London Liverpool Street.

"This forms part of the capacity enhancement programme agreed in partnership with the Department for Transport in April this year."

This week it was also announced that the first air-conditioned underground train has arrived in London and by 2011 there will be 58 air-conditioned trains on the Metropolitan Line.
