Save on sightseeing in London and enjoy a leafier city
Last Updated: Thu 29 Oct 2009

Up to 4,000 new trees are to be planted in the streets of the capital, making London sightseeing more pleasant for those that enjoy nature as well as the hustle and bustle of the city.

Thanks to funding from Mayor of London Boris Johnson the trees will be planted between November and spring next year, with financial grants offered to organisations to plant trees in 20 boroughs.

During his election the mayor pledged efficiency savings would be ploughed into 10,000 street trees and, earlier this year, 1,500 trees were planted in ten boroughs.

Londoners say that improvements to their local environment help to make their communities better places to live and tourists visiting London attractions will also enjoy the touch of nature.

Mr Johnson said: "Trees are wonderful additions to our communities helping to make neighbourhoods more pleasant. I am thrilled with the success of this programme in planting these trees in the areas that will benefit most."

The aim of the Street Trees project is to plant 100-400 trees per area in the 40 areas that would most benefit from the social, economic and environmental improvements that new street trees provide.
