Save on London attractions, including monument to Great Fire of London
Last Updated: Fri 27 Nov 2009

Fire fighters in London have extinguished blazes that forced over 300 people to flee their homes yesterday (Thursday, 26th November), over 340 years after the Great Fire of London devastated the city.

The fire broke out in south-east London at around 04:30 GMT and destroyed blocks of maisonettes and a pub. The Great Fire of London, however, destroyed 13,200 houses.

Visitors to the Monument, located 202ft from where the Great Fire of London is believed to have started, can climb the 311 stairs inside the 202ft column to the Monument's observation gallery and enjoy views across the city - a unique way to enjoy London sightseeing.

On Sunday, September 2nd 1666 a fire broke out on Pudding Lane and, as the houses were made of wood and packed into narrow streets, it soon spread, destroying 436 acres of the city.

The Monument, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was completed in 1677 and has recently undergone an 18-month programme of improvements and repairs, making it an appealing option for those looking for things to see in London.
