Queen Sofia takes budget flight to London
Last Updated: Wed 3 Jun 2009

Queen Sofia - the head of state in Spain - has set an example in the economic downturn by taking a budget flight to London.

She boarded the Ryanair flight, which is believed to have cost just £13, when she travelled from London Stansted to Santander.

"Whenever possible the royals use Spanish airlines but in this case Ryanair was the most suitable option for the journey," a palace spokesperson revealed to the Daily Telegraph.

He added that it was likely to have been the first time a member of the Spanish royal family had chosen to fly with the airline.

It is believed that Queen Sofia was travelling to see her brother King Constantine II of Greece who moved to London after the monarchy was abolished 36 years ago.

There are plenty of royal sights to be seen in the city and, with the London Pass, the likes of Kensington Palace and the Jewel Tower can be entered free of charge.ADNFCR-1693-ID-19199951-ADNFCR
