Free entry & fast track to 55+ London attractions: Museum to display historic find
Last Updated: Wed 26 Aug 2009

The Museum of London Docklands is to showcase a rather unusual find from today (August 26th).

A ball and chain will be on display to visitors after it was found in the Thames, believed to date back to the 17th or 18th century.

"Whether a real-life Magwitch freed himself from the 'great iron on his leg', or perished in shackles, or whether this ball and chain was simply discarded, we can never know," said Kate Sumnall, finds liaison officer at the Museum of London Docklands.

She said that the Thames holds a number of stories from London's past, with the latest find giving a true insight into life in the capital.

The ball and chain was discovered by Rick Jones and Steve Brooker, who found it in mud by the Thames.

Anyone heading to London can make the most of its waterways with a Thames River Cruise, which gives a unique perspective on some of its greatest attractions.
