Fan museum reveals little aspects of cultural history
Last Updated: Thu 30 Oct 2008

A unique London museum is to showcase a collection thought of as one of the most important among experts in the field.

London's Fan Museum, which it claims it is the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to the art and craft of fans, will host Sleeping Beauties Fan Collection from Castle Friedenstein, Gotha from November 4th.

While many people might not considering visiting a museum of this niche part of world culture, there is no denying the beauty of its exhibits, none more so than those featured in this forthcoming event.

The selection includes fans that have lain unnoticed at Castle Friedenstein in Gotha, eastern Germany, once the property of the influtntial Duke Augustus of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in the 19th century.

This new exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the role that fans played in society among the ruling classes of Europe around this time.

London's Fan Museum is located in Greenwich, southeast London – and holds more than 3,500 items in its archive. It serves afternoon tea every Tuesday and Sunday at 1500.

Visitors to the Fan Museum can gain free entry on production of their LondonPass, saving £4 for adults and £3 for children.ADNFCR-1693-ID-18851139-ADNFCR
