Cultural Olympiad begins at London gallery
Last Updated: Mon 29 Sep 2008

The Cultural Olympiad – a four-year programme of events organised to tie in with the 2012 London Olympics - got underway over the weekend, with the action taking place at various concert halls, attractions and galleries across the country.

According to the Times, around £40 million will be spent on promoting the arts over the next four years.

The programme of events officially began on Friday, when Olympic committee chairman Lord Coe joined athletes Kelly Holmes and Jonathan Edwards to run around the Duveen Galleries in Tate Britain.

Elsewhere, a carnival took place in Hackney and many of London's top cultural attractions invited the public to venture backstage, as part of London 2012 Open Weekend.

Cultural Olympiad celebrations also took place in Windsor over the weekend, with Light Up Windsor! illuminating some of the town's familiar sights and attractions.
